Two Switch 2 cases can sit side by side in a shop, same size, same red spine, same price, and only one of them holds the game. The other holds a Game-Key Card: a cartridge that unlocks a download. Telling them apart takes about five seconds once you know where to look.
On the box
Nintendo requires a marking on the front of the case. Look at the bottom edge of the cover art for a white strip with a key icon and the words “Game-Key Card”. If the strip is there, the game is a download. If the front is clean, turn the case over anyway, because the back is where the required storage and the “internet connection required for download” note are printed. A full cartridge release has no download requirement in that box, only the usual notes about optional online features.
On a store page
Online listings are less reliable than packaging. Some retailers put the format in the product title, some bury it in the description, and some reuse early placeholder art that predates the final cover. Three habits help:
- Zoom in on the cover image and look for the white strip. If the image is a placeholder, assume nothing.
- Search the description for “download” and “key”.
- Check the listing again shortly before release. Formats have changed after pre-orders opened.
On a used copy
A Game-Key Card is not locked to an account, so a second-hand one works as long as Nintendo’s servers still host the download. All Switch 2 game cards are red, so colour tells you nothing. Go by the case: if a seller’s photos crop out the bottom of the front cover, ask for one that shows it.
What you are actually choosing between
| Full cartridge | Game-Key Card | |
|---|---|---|
| Plays without a download | Yes | No |
| Needs the card inserted to play | Yes | Yes |
| Uses console or microSD Express storage | Only for updates and saves | The entire game |
| Can be lent or resold | Yes | Yes |
| Works after the eShop download is withdrawn | Yes | Only if already downloaded |
Does it matter?
That depends on why you buy boxed games. If it is for the resale value, the lending, or the shelf, a key card gives you most of that. If it is so the game still works on a console you pull out of a drawer in 2040, only a full cartridge does that job. We would rather know which one we are paying for, and the white strip is how you find out.
