Four days after it was announced, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition has its first format detail, and collectors will not like it. The product page on Nintendo’s UK store lists the boxed Switch 2 version as a Game-Key Card. My Nintendo News spotted the listing on September 13.
What a Game-Key Card release means here
The case will contain a red Switch 2 card, but the card holds a licence rather than the game. You insert it, download the full game from the eShop, and keep the card in the slot whenever you play. It is not tied to an account, so it can still be lent or resold. What it cannot do is work as a self-contained copy once the download servers are gone, and that is the whole reason many of us buy physical in the first place.
No discount for people who bought it in 2020
The second detail stings more. According to the same report there is no upgrade pack. Several first-party Switch games received paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades that let you keep your old cartridge and pay the difference. Age of Calamity is being sold as a new product instead, so anyone who owns the original pays full price again. Nintendo has not published that price yet.
Save data does carry over; Nintendo said so during the Direct. The Definitive Edition also adds a Calamity Mode and targets the frame-rate problems that dogged the 2020 release, which regularly buckled in co-op and in the larger battles.
Our read
Key cards have mostly been a third-party habit, driven by what Switch 2 cartridges cost to make. Seeing one on a game carrying Nintendo’s own label and the Zelda name is a different signal, and not a welcome one for anyone building a Switch 2 shelf.
The original Switch cartridge remains a complete, offline copy of the game, performance warts and all, and it runs on Switch 2. If your priority is a cart that will still boot in fifteen years, that is the version to hold on to. If you mainly want the smoother frame rate, the Game-Key Card and the eShop download are the same purchase in practice, so buy whichever is cheaper on the day.
Release is set for February 25, 2027.
