If you pre-ordered Danganronpa 2×2 on Switch 2 because it was advertised on a real cartridge, check your order. Spike Chunsoft announced on August 26 that the North American and European Switch 2 physical release will now ship as a Game-Key Card.
The publisher’s statement gave no reason. It said the decision “was not taken lightly and follows careful consideration” and that the company had no further details to share. Game Rant reports that existing physical purchases of the Switch 2 version are being refunded. How that plays out will depend on the shop, so contact your retailer instead of waiting for an automatic cancellation.
What is and is not affected
- Changed: the Switch 2 boxed version in North America and Europe.
- Unchanged: the original Switch boxed version, plus PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- Release date: still January 14, 2027, as reconfirmed in the September 9 Nintendo Direct.
Why this one is different
Game-Key Cards are not new. What is unusual is the direction of travel: this release was sold as a full cartridge first and downgraded afterwards. Visual novels are small games, so storage capacity is unlikely to be the issue. Cartridge pricing is the usual suspect. Publishers have complained since launch that Switch 2 cards are expensive to manufacture, and a niche title with a modest print run feels that cost most.
For buyers the fix is simple, and a little absurd. The Switch 1 cartridge holds the complete game and plays on Switch 2. You give up whatever enhancements the Switch 2 build brings, and you keep a copy that does not depend on a download. We would take that trade for a text-heavy adventure game.
The wider lesson is about pre-orders. A format printed on a store page in the summer is a plan, not a promise.
