When I had a chance to try out the EvoRetro Switch Controller Grips, I jumped on it. I’ve been meaning to pick up a pair of grips like this for a while now, because, while I don’t have enormous hands, I have big enough hands where using a single Joy-Con feels a bit comical. With the ability to put the Joy-Con into a larger grip with handles, I feel like I can be a little less dainty with it. So how did the EvoRetro grips stack up? Let’s break it down.

Pros:
Sturdy material
Solid construction
Colors are a pretty spot-on match with the red and blue Joy-Cons
The shoulder buttons were responsive
The blue grip fit the Joy-Cons quite well
Comfortable and ergonomically pleasing feel
Cons:
While there is a cutaway designed to assist with removing the Joy-Con, it is still rather difficult to remove it without feeling like you’re going to damage the controller
The red grip seemed to be irregular and did not comfortably fit either Joy-Con; the Joy-Con would sit where the shoulder buttons would still trigger properly, but it just never seemed to sit flush with the face of the grip like the blue grip allowed

Overall, for the price, I don’t think this is a bad deal. I wish the red grip fit the Joy-Con better, but since it still functions properly either way, I suppose it will suffice—at least the blue one fits like a glove. My wife preferred playing with just the slide on the Joy-Con anyway, so it kind of worked out—but again, for the price of $8.48 for the pair, I wasn’t expecting to be playing with the Rolls Royce of Nintendo Switch Controller Grips, so I would again say my expectations were met with this product. If you’re looking for some inexpensive controller grips for the next time you have a few friends over for some Mario Kart, it really couldn’t hurt to have a few of these on standby!
Score: 6.5/10
